A Huge Second Period Brings Victory To The Kodiaks

The Peterborough Lakers (4-4) traveled to face the Cobourg Kodiaks (4-3) in Major Series Lacrosse action Sunday evening at the Cobourg Community Centre in Cobourg, Ontario.
The goaltending match-up had Deacan Knott in net for the Lakers facing Laine Hruska in net for the Kodiaks.
In a game that was tied after twenty minutes, the Cobourg Kodiaks used a dominant middle frame to pull away from the Peterborough Lakers and earn a 13-9 victory Sunday evening at the Cobourg Community Centre. Peterborough carried the early momentum with goals from Mike Robinson, Colton Armstrong, and Rob Hellyer, but Cobourg answered every challenge as Brock Haley and Alex Marinier led the charge to keep the game even through one period.
The second period belonged entirely to the Kodiaks, who erupted for seven goals in just over thirteen minutes to take control of the contest. Zach Thompson's three-goal performance, combined with strong offensive contributions from Marinier, Halliwell, Woods, and Bafia, gave Cobourg a five-goal cushion heading into the final frame. The Lakers showed resilience by scoring four straight goals in the third to make things interesting, but Marinier's late insurance markers extinguished any comeback hopes, lifting the Kodiaks to a convincing home victory.
To The Game:
The Lakers got off to a great start with Mike Robinson blasting a Braedon Saris pass just 55 seconds into the game on the power-play, followed by Colton Armstrong going coast to coast in transition at 8:02 for a two goal lead.
Brock Haley got Cobourg on the board with a sidearm snipe off an Alex Marinier pass at 8:23, followed by Marinier himself with a low to low missile from the outside at 9:52 to tie the game.
Rob Hellyer gave Peterborough the lead once again with a bounced shot off a Braedon Saris pass at 13:02, but Brock Haley's second of the period tied the game off an Alex Marinier pass at 15:18.
After one period, Peterborough 3 Cobourg 3.
Shots on goal favored the Lakers 21-20.
Second Period:
Cobourg came out on a mission in the second period.
Shane Halliwell beat Deacan Knott to the glove side off a David Anderson pass at 1:22, followed by Zach Thompson with a laser off an Aaron Woods feed at 5:05.
Nick Bafia scored in transition off a long lead pass from Laine Hruska at 5:47, followed by Brock Haley on the power-play with a blast off a Zach Thompson pass at 6:34. Aaron Woods then found the back of the net off a Shane Halliwell feed at 7:28.
Peterborough replaced Deacan Knott with Drew Hutchison in net.
Taite Cattoni finally stopped the Kodiaks run with a goal from the top of the crease off a Ryan Lanchbury pass at 9:14, but Zach Thompson replied with a shot from the side of the net off an Alex Marinier pass at 10:56.
The Lakers kept pushing with Ryan Lanchbury scoring off a Colton Armitage pass at 14:09, but Zach Thompson answered back with a low outside shot off a Shane Halliwell feed at 14:36.
After two periods, Cobourg 10 Peterborough 5
Shots on goal favored the Kodiaks 25-18.
Third Period:
Alex Marinier increased the Kodiaks lead with an inside shot off a Zach Thompson pass at 1:35 on the power-play.
The Lakers kept fighting with Colton Armitage converting a Ryan Lanchbury pass at 2:11, followed by Taite Cattoni with a low to low laser unassisted at 4:24 while shorthanded.
Ryan Lanchbury then quick sticked a Taite Cattoni feed at 11:44, followed by Mike Robinson with an outside howitzer off a Rob Hellyer pass at 12:31.
The Kodiaks stopped the Lakers momentum with Alex Marinier scoring back to back markers off David Anderson feeds late in the period to put an exclamation mark on the game.
Final score, Cobourg 13 Peterborough 9.
Shots on goal favored the Kodiaks 19-14, for a game total of 64-53 in favor of Cobourg.
