BLC Rights the Ship After Eking Out a Win in Owen Sound

By Mark Stehlin
The Brooklin Lacrosse Club (BLC) drifted into the Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound on Saturday evening after a pair of losses and a sub-.500 record looking for a win to get the season back on an even keel. The organization made a couple of deals this week, adding offensive threat Dylan Watson from the Owen Sound NorthStars as well as some grit in Broedie Birkhof from the Peterborough Lakers. Watson dressed last night against his former mates. BLC had 17 runners while their hosts fielded just 14 for the game. As the final buzzer sounded, BLC outlasted their hosts with a 7-6 win to get back to 6-6 on the season.
As BLC’s Senior B affiliate Brooklin Merchants were also in action General Manager, Gavin Prout had to get creative and ask some players to wear different jerseys. Netminder, Ryan Schuetzkowski in addition to players such as Adam Perroni and Robbie Baxter wore BLC colours last night.
Aden Walsh took his spot in net for BLC while Andrew Kidd did the same for the hosts.
It was Owen Sound who struck first only to watch Chase Scanlan for BLC, with his team-leading 16th, tie the game just 24 seconds later. Nate Woods added one in transition, followed by Baxter with another one late and the score was 3-1 for the visitors after one period.
The NorthStars came out hot in the middle frame and with half a period to go knotted the game at 3-3. Watson went to work for his new team and scored to regain the lead. A pair of short-handed goals by the NorthStars late in the middle frame gave BLC some cause for concern as the teams went to break with Owen Sound ahead 5-4.
BLC head coach Joel Johnson used his magic during intermission and Watson, with his second of the night, tied the game. Owen Sound did answer for another brief lead but Scanlan and Will MacLeod with goals just a minute apart late in the game secured the win for Brooklin.
The week ahead features a home and home series with the Oakville Rock (8-2) who will host BLC on Monday at 7:30 p.m. and travel to Iroquois Park on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
