The Owen Sound NorthStars (0-1) and the Six Nations Chiefs (1-0) opened up their 2026 Major Series Lacrosse season at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena for the annual bread and cheese game Monday night.
A little history on the Bread and Cheese celebration:
In appreciation of their allegiance to the British Empire during the American Revolution and the War of 1812 Queen Victoria began an annual tradition of giving gifts to the Six Nations community, namely blankets. The custom ended with Victoria's death in 1901. In 1924 the Grand Council of the Six Nations decided to revive the practice, this time with gifts of bread and cheese as a commemoration of the close ties between Six Nations and the British Crown.
The goaltending match-up had Doug Jamieson in net for the Chiefs facing Andrew Kidd for Owen Sound.
Although the Owen Sound NorthStars battled hard through the opening frame, the relentless attack of the Six Nations Chiefs eventually broke through. Wave after wave of offensive pressure saw the Chiefs spread the scoring around, with Andrew Kew, Ryan Smith, Dhane Smith, and Dawson Theede all finding the back of the net to give Six Nations a commanding 4-0 lead after the first period.
The Six Nations Chiefs took complete control in the second period and never looked back, cruising to a dominant 12-0 victory over the Owen Sound NorthStars.
After building a 4-0 first period lead, the Chiefs exploded offensively in the middle frame. Andrew Kew struck twice early, including a shorthanded marker, before Josh Byrne and Chris Cloutier added to the barrage. Cloutier scored twice in the period, while Byrne capped the frame with a spectacular buzzer-beater diving across the crease with one second remaining to give Six Nations a commanding 10-0 lead after forty minutes.
The Chiefs kept rolling in the third as Dhane Smith blasted home a marker midway through the period before Cloutier completed his hat trick late in regulation. Owen Sound turned to Caleb Martin in relief of Andrew Kidd to begin the third, but the Chiefs attack continued to dictate the pace until the final whistle.
Cloutier finished with three goals, while Kew, Byrne, and Dhane Smith all had multi-point performances as Six Nations completed the shutout in emphatic fashion.

The Chiefs got on the board first with an outside shot from Andrew Kew off a Dawson Theede pass at 4:00, followed by Ryan Smith with a great individual effort at 5:39.
