Kodiaks pull away late to beat Owen Sound
Jackson Nishimura’s third goal of the night with just over two minutes to play in regulation proved to be the winner as the Cobourg Kodiaks beat Owen Sound 13-11 at the MSL Classic.
The Kodiaks improve to 4-3 at the MSL Classic, while Owen Sound drops to 3-4.
Nishimura gave the Kodiaks the start they were looking for, scoring twice, before Kealan Pilon made it a three-goal lead. But Keegan White scored two of his own to get Owen Sound to within one goal to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter, both teams battled hard, with Colton Armstrong, Marcus Minnichiello and Bennett Drake giving the Kodiaks another one-goal advantage heading into the half. Jordan Caskenette, Brett Kloepfer and White responded for Owen Sound.
The Kodiaks maintained the one-goal lead thanks to goals from Drake and Ty Kurtz, while Mike Fiegehen and Kyle Dawson responded for Owen Sound.
The fourth quarter was another tight one, with Drake and Scott Del Zotto scoring early for the Kodiaks to increase the lead, before John St. John and Minnichiello exchanged goals. Owen Sound got going and went on a run to tie things up thanks to Caskenette, Josh Medeiros and St. John, before Nishimura netted the winner, and Skylar Thomas added the empty-netter for teh Kodiaks.
Wednesday, the Kodiaks close out their MSL Classic against the Six Nations Chiefs, while Owen Sound does the same against the Brooklin Lacrosse Club. Both games are at 8pm.
