MSL - Week 5 Review

Week 5 of the 2019 Major Series Lacrosse season saw five games played including Peterborough winning a pair of games. Six Nations were 2-1 and Brampton and Oakville went 1-1. The Cobourg Kodiaks had a winless week losing once. The Brooklin Lacrosse Club added two more losses to bring their season to 0-9.

Game 1 –  OT - Brampton (11) at Oakville (10) – Brampton won in overtime for an important victory.   Oakville rallied in the third period outscoring Brampton 3-0 to send the game into overtime. Excelsiors’ outstanding rookie Jeff Teat scored in the first minute of overtime to give Brampton the lead which they would not give up.  Top Point Players for the game included Brampton’s Dallas Bridle 2g, 1a, Mike Burke 1g, 2a and Tanner Thompson 1g, 2a.   For the Rock - Andrew Kew 2g, 2a, Rob Hellyer 0g, 3a and Brad Gillies 2g, 0a.  Goaltender Nolan Clayton made 43 saves while recording the win.

Game 2Brooklin (4) at Six Nations (10) – Six Nations led 4-1 at the end of the first period and built up a 7-2 lead by the end of the second period.  Jordan Durston had a 6-point game including 2 goals.  Other offensive contributors included Brendan Bomberry and Lyle Thompson each with 3 goals.  Goaltender Doug Jamieson recorded the win for Six Nations.  For the Brooklin Lacrosse Club, it was another disappointing loss.  The bright side saw rookie Brent Noseworthy scoring his first two goals as an MSL player.

Game 3OT - Peterborough (12) at Brooklin (9) –  The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers fought hard for a 12-9 overtime win over the Brooklin Lacrosse Club.  The Lakers fell down 3-0 early in the game and trailed 4-1 after the first. The Lakers chipped away at the lead in the remaining 40 minutes but Brooklin managed to stay one step ahead until Shawn Evans scored the game-tying goal with five seconds remaining in the third. Turner Evans, Shawn Evans and Ethan Walker scored in overtime while the Lakers held the Brooklin Lacrosse Club scoreless.  Goaltender Mike Poulin recorded the victory in nets.

Game 4Cobourg (7) at Peterborough (13) – The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers extended their winning streak to four games with a 13-7 victory over the Cobourg Kodiaks. The win keeps them two points ahead of the Six Nations Chiefs for first place race.  The Lakers led 3-0 1:18 into the game. They scored four more in the frame and led 7-2 after the first period and were up 9-5 after the second. Recently acquired Mark Matthews had a 3-assist game in his first appearance as a Laker.  Peterborough native Cam Milligan had two goals for the Kodiaks.  Goaltender Mike Poulin recorded the win for Peterborough stopping 37 shots.  The win gives the MSL's first place Lakers a record of 8-2. The loss has Cobourg with 5 wins and 4 losses.

Game 5Six Nations (11) at Brampton (7) – Led by the MSL’s #1 goal scorer (18 in total) Randy Staats netted 5 goals as the Six Nations Chiefs won their fourth straight game defeating the Brampton Excelsiors 11-7. Chiefs goalie Doug Jamieson recorded an MSL league leading 6th win for a goalie. The win gives the Chiefs a 7-2 record. The loss has Brampton at 3 wins and 6 losses.

Game 6Six Nations (3) at Oakville (11) – The Oakville Rock scored in bunches on their way to a one-sided victory over the visiting Six Nations Chiefs. In the first period, the Rock scored 3 goals in a 3-minute span during the middle of the period. In the second period, Oakville scored 3 times in a 4-minute run. And in the third period, where the Rock outscored the Chiefs 4-0, the four goals came over a 5-minute span. Dan Craig led the way offensively with one goal and 5 assists.  Goaltender Nick Rose recorded the victory.  The win puts Oakville tied with Cobourg for third place with 5 wins and 4 losses at the mid-point of the 2019 MSL season. The loss sees the Chiefs fall to 7 wins and 3 losses, maintaining a solid hold onto second place.
