Nine goal run vaults Lakers to win over Kodiaks
The Peterborough Lakers and Cobourg Kodiaks were certainly glad to be back on the floor, and gave a great crowd at the Cobourg Community Centre a show Sunday.
In the return of Major Series Lacrosse, the Lakers went on a nine-goal run en route to a 15-11 victory over the Kodiaks.
To open the game, both teams went on runs to knot things up after 20 minutes. Turner Evans, Cory Vitarelli and Corey Small got the Lakers going in the first four minutes of the game, before Cam Milligan and Kiel Matisz exchanged goals. The Kodiaks closed the first period with a run of their own thanks to Milligan, Kealan Pilon and Brine Rice.
The Kodiaks continued to roll early in the second period when Joe French and Aaron Woods scored giving their team its first lead of the game. But the Lakers quickly replied with Evans and Small, before Bennett Drake gave the Kodiaks another lead.
But that’s as close as the Kodiaks got.
Holden Cattoni, Thomas Hoggarth, and Austin Hasen then led the nine-goal run beginning with less than four minutes to go in the second period, and continued midway through the third. Ben Trumble, Mitch Ogilvie and Caleb Creasor added goals.
With six minutes to go, the Kodiaks showed a ton of fight, going on a five-goal run to close the gap. Gareth Haigh, Milligan, Rice and Ben French all scored goals.
Mike Poulin got the win between the pipes for the Lakers, while Kevin Orleman was in goal for the Kodiaks.
NOTES:
•Milligan led the Kodiaks with a hat trick and three assists, while Evans had two goals and three helpers to lead the defending Mann Cup champions. Shawn Evans was a huge factor pitching in with five assists for the Lakers.
