More Than a Superstar

Every generation has players who redefine greatness. Very few redefine the game itself.

Lyle Thompson has done both.
To many fans, he's one of the most gifted offensive players lacrosse has ever seen. To Indigenous communities across North America, he represents something even greater—a proud ambassador for the Creator's Game, carrying the traditions of his ancestors while inspiring the next generation to embrace the sport and their culture.

Whether he's scoring impossible goals, delivering pinpoint passes through impossible seams, or simply playing with a smile that reflects his love of the game, Thompson reminds us that lacrosse is meant to be played with imagination, creativity, and joy.

Early Years

Raised on the Onondaga Nation, Lyle grew up in one of the sport's most respected lacrosse families alongside brothers Jeremy, Miles, and Ty. Lacrosse wasn't simply a pastime—it was part of everyday life and a connection to generations that came before him.

From an early age, his stick skills bordered on unbelievable. Long before national audiences discovered him, those who watched him grow up knew they were witnessing a special talent whose understanding of the game seemed almost instinctive.

Climbing the Ladder

Thompson starred at Lafayette High School before continuing his journey at the University at Albany, where he transformed NCAA lacrosse.

Playing alongside his brother Miles, he became one of the most electrifying players college lacrosse has ever seen. His ability to score from impossible angles, create opportunities for teammates, and control the pace of a game helped turn Albany into a national powerhouse.

Among his collegiate accomplishments:
•  Two-time recipient of the Tewaaraton Award, college lacrosse's highest individual honour.
•  NCAA Division I career leader in points at the time of his graduation.
•  Multiple First Team All-American selections.
•  Helped redefine what an elite attackman could be.
His Albany career wasn't simply historic—it changed the way many people viewed the offensive possibilities of the modern game.

National Lacrosse League

Selected 1st overall by the Georgia Swarm in the 2015 NLL Entry Draft, Thompson quickly became one of the league's brightest stars.

With Georgia, he has earned:
•  NLL Championship.
•  League MVP honours.
•  Numerous All-League selections.
•  Consistent recognition as one of the world's elite offensive players.
What separates Thompson is balance. He's equally dangerous as a scorer and a passer, making defensive game plans almost impossible.

Major Series Lacrosse

When Lyle Thompson suits up for the Six Nations Chiefs, fans know they're about to witness something special.

His presence has helped make the Chiefs one of the premier organizations in Major Series Lacrosse. More importantly, he's elevated the play of everyone around him. Great players produce points; truly great players inspire teammates to play better.

His creativity has resulted in goals that fans remember for years—not because they were flashy, but because they seemed almost impossible until he made them look effortless.

International Career

Representing the Haudenosaunee Nationals has always been one of Thompson's greatest honours.

Competing on the international stage, he has proudly represented the Haudenosaunee Confederacy while helping bring worldwide attention to the origins of the game. His commitment to playing for his people has made him one of the most respected ambassadors in all of lacrosse.

Beyond the Floor

Away from competition, Thompson is widely admired for his humility, generosity, and dedication to growing the game.

He has spent countless hours working with young players through camps, clinics, and community events, always emphasizing that success in lacrosse begins with respect—for the game, for your teammates, and for your opponents.

To many young Indigenous athletes, he has become proof that staying true to your identity and culture can take you to the very highest levels of sport.

Gary Groob's Take

I've covered a lot of outstanding lacrosse players, but watching Lyle Thompson is a different experience.
You can appreciate his statistics, but they don't explain why fans stop what they're doing when he has the ball.

 It's the anticipation.

Every possession feels like it could produce something you've never seen before.

What impresses me most isn't the spectacular goals—although there have been plenty of those. It's the simplicity with which he plays. He never looks like he's trying to impress anyone. He's simply playing the game the way he believes it should be played: with creativity, patience, unselfishness, and joy.

There have been many great players in Major Series Lacrosse history. Lyle Thompson belongs in the conversation with the very best. Not only because of what he's accomplished, but because of the way he's inspired countless young players to pick up a stick, embrace the traditions of the Creator's Game, and believe that imagination can be just as powerful as athletic ability.

For me, that's the mark of a true legend.
