Never Judge a Player by His Size

Standing just 5-foot-8, Rob Hellyer has spent his entire career proving that heart, intelligence, and determination can outweigh size.

From the small community of Lion's Head on Ontario's Bruce Peninsula to the bright lights of the National Lacrosse League and the tradition-rich floor of Major Series Lacrosse, Hellyer has built one of the most respected careers in the sport. He's never been the biggest player on the floor, but year after year he has been one of the smartest, toughest, and most productive.

Whether he's threading a no-look pass through traffic, diving across the crease, or battling for a loose ball against much larger defenders, Hellyer plays with an edge that has defined his career.

Early Years

Growing up in Lion's Head, Hellyer learned the game in one of Ontario's proud lacrosse regions. He began in the Wiarton minor system before continuing his development with the Owen Sound organization, where his skill and compete level quickly stood out. Even at a young age, he possessed the vision and creativity that would later become his trademark.

Climbing the Ladder

Hellyer's junior career truly flourished with the Orangeville Northmen, one of Canada's premier Junior A programs.

Over four outstanding seasons, he became one of the league's most dynamic offensive players, compiling nearly 300 points in regular-season play while helping Orangeville capture the 2012 Minto Cup. Along the way, he earned OJLL All-Star recognition and established himself as one of the top prospects in the country.

National Lacrosse League

Selected 30th overall by the Toronto Rock in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft, Hellyer wasn't considered a can't-miss prospect. He simply went to work.

He made his NLL debut at just 18 years old and helped Toronto win the 2011 NLL Championship as a rookie. Over the next decade, he evolved from a depth player into one of the league's premier offensive threats.

His career has included stops with:

Along the way he has:
•  Become an NLL MVP finalist. 
•  Earned All-League honours.

Major Series Lacrosse

Hellyer has been a difference-maker wherever he has played in Major Series Lacrosse.
Known for his ability to control the pace of a game, he combines outstanding vision with a scorer's mentality. Defenders must respect his shot, but it's often the pass they never see coming that causes the most damage.
His arrival in Peterborough added another elite offensive weapon to one of the league's most successful franchises, and he has continued to be a key contributor in the Lakers' pursuit of another Mann Cup.

Beyond the Floor

Away from lacrosse, Hellyer has built a successful career in real estate while balancing the demands of professional sport and family life. Those who know him best describe him as approachable, competitive, and a teammate who leads more through his preparation and consistency than through words.

Some players dominate with pure athleticism. Rob Hellyer has built his career on something just as valuable—lacrosse intelligence.

I've always admired the way he sees the game. He rarely forces a play, and he has an uncanny ability to slow the game down when everyone else is speeding up. That's a rare quality. He makes the difficult look routine because he seems to be thinking one pass ahead of everyone else on the floor.

What also stands out is his resilience. Being a smaller forward in a physical game means every possession is earned. Yet year after year, regardless of the team or the role, Hellyer continues to produce. Championships, nearly a thousand NLL points, and a reputation as one of the game's smartest offensive players don't happen by accident—they're the result of preparation, toughness, and an incredible feel for the game.

For me, Rob Hellyer represents the kind of player every coach wants: skilled, dependable, selfless, and capable of changing a game with one brilliant decision. That's why he's unquestionably one of the Stars of MSL.
