A Strong Third Period Gives Cobourg A Big Come From Behind Victory

By Gary Groob

The Cobourg Kodiaks (1-1) traveled west to face the Brooklin Lacrosse Club (1-2) in Major Series Lacrosse action Wednesday night at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby, Ontario.

The goaltending match-up had Laine Hruska in net for the Kodiaks facing Steven Orleman in net for Brooklin.

The Cobourg Kodiaks erased a two-goal third period deficit with a furious late-game rally, storming back to defeat the Brooklin Lacrosse Club 10-8 in a thrilling back-and-forth battle. After Brooklin controlled much of the first half behind a balanced offensive attack and a three-goal performance from Dan Lintner, the Kodiaks slowly chipped away at the lead before exploding in the final frame. Shane Halliwell ignited the comeback with a dominant third period, scoring twice including the go-ahead marker, while Aaron Woods took over late with a natural hat-trick in the final 10 minutes to completely swing the momentum in Cobourg’s favour.

Brooklin appeared poised to cruise after building a 6-4 lead through two periods thanks to strong performances from Connor Kearnan, Reilly O’Connor, and Will MacLeod, but Cobourg refused to back down. Brock Haley became the catalyst offensively, setting up several key goals during the comeback while Halliwell’s relentless pressure and Woods’ crease-crashing finish proved too much to contain. After Brooklin battled back to tie the game twice in the closing minutes, Woods buried the eventual game-winner at 19:12 before adding an empty net goal to cap off an impressive Kodiaks comeback victory.

To The Game:

Brooklin opened the scoring with Dan Lintner converting a Reilly O'Connor feed with a quick stick on the power-play at 2:55, but the Kodiaks responded with Shane Halliwell wiring a low to low shot off a Briley Maxwell pass also on the power-play at 8:01.

Brooklin regained the lead with Ryan Barnable finishing a Jaxon Raposo pass at 10:38.

After one period, Brooklin 2 Cobourg 1.

Second Period:

Brooklin opened the second period scoring with Will MacLeod quick sticking a Connor Kearnan pass at 5:43, followed by Dan Lintner with his second of the game from the outside also off a Kearnan feed at 6:46.  Connor Kearnan then got on the scoresheet himself with an outside blast off a Reilly O'Connor feed at 11:59.

Brock Haley got Cobourg back in the game off a Zach Thompson pass at 12:48, followed by a beauty from in close by Alex Marinier just 0:18 seconds later.

Chris Boushy increased the Brooklin lead from the top of the crease off a Connor Kearnan pass at 14:35, but Shane Halliwell replied with a sidearm snipe 0:33 seconds later to keep it a two goal game.

After two periods, Brooklin 6 Cobourg 4.

Third Period:

After nearly half a period of scoreless action in the third, Aaron Woods was able to jump across the crease scoring shortside off a Brock Haley pass at 9:24, followed by a great individual effort from Shane Halliwell diving across the crease off a Brock Haley pass at 12:07 to tie the game.

Halliwell then blasted an outside shot off a Zach Thompson feed at 13:15 to take their first lead of the game, but Will MacLeod tied the game with a goal from in close off a Reilly O'Connor pass at 15:36.

Aaron Woods gave the Kodiaks the lead once again jumping across the crease off a Shane Halliwell pass at 16:49, but Dan Lintner's third of the game on a screen again knotted the game off a Chase Scanlon pass at 17:43.

Aaron Woods then scored his third of the period diving across the crease off a Brock Haley pass at 19:12, and sealed the deal with an empty net marker at 19:56.
