Chiefs Dominate Lakers to Move Within One Win of MSL Championship

The Peterborough Lakers traveled west to face the Six Nations Chiefs in Game five of the Major Series Lacrosse Finals at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, Ontario. 

The goaltending matchup had Drew Hutchison in net for the Lakers facing Doug Jamieson in net for the Chiefs. 

The Six Nations Chiefs moved within one victory of the Major Series Lacrosse championship with a commanding 11-5 win over the Peterborough Lakers in Game Five. Six Nations scored the game’s first seven goals and carried an 8-4 advantage into the final period after Peterborough briefly found life with three consecutive second-period markers.

Lyle Thompson led the Chiefs with three goals and two assists, while Andrew Kew contributed two goals and three assists and Chris Cloutier recorded a hat trick. Doug Jamieson and the Six Nations defence held Peterborough to just five goals as the Chiefs took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series heading into Sunday’s Game Six in Peterborough.

To The Game:

Six Nations opened the scoring with back-to-back goals from Lyle Thompson. His first was a low-to-low bouncer off a Dhane Smith pass at 2:05, followed by a sidearm snipe on the power play off an Andrew Kew feed at 8:34.

Chris Cloutier extended the lead, finding the far corner from in close off another Kew feed at 10:04. Dhane Smith then made it 4-0 with a high-to-low blast off a Lyle Thompson pass at 18:06.

After one period, Six Nations 4, Peterborough 0.

Second Period:

Chris Cloutier opened the second-period scoring with a bounced shot from the side of the net off a Matt Hossack pass just 42 seconds into the frame. Lyle Thompson followed by burying a penalty shot low to the corner at 4:10, before Andrew Kew added an outside blast on the power play off a Thompson feed at 5:54.

Ryan Lanchbury finally got Peterborough on the board with back-to-back goals. He opened the Lakers’ scoring with a high-to-high blast off a Rob Hellyer pass while shorthanded at 7:43, then struck on the power play with a short-side shot off a Braedon Saris feed at 9:52. Brad McCulley continued the Lakers’ momentum with a highlight-reel, behind-the-back goal off a Lanchbury pass at 11:55.

Dhane Smith got the Chiefs back on track, finishing from in close on the power play off an Andrew Kew pass at 16:41. However, Rob Hellyer answered with a sidearm snipe off a Justin Sykes feed at 17:31.

After two periods, Six Nations 8, Peterborough 4.

Third Period:

Rob Hellyer opened the third-period scoring with a twister off a Colton Armitage pass at 3:58, but Chris Cloutier answered with a diving finish across the crease off a Ryan Smith feed at 5:40.

Ian MacKay added an unassisted transition goal, going coast-to-coast at 7:01, before Andrew Kew capped the scoring with a low-to-low blast from the outside off a Cody Jamieson feed at 11:34.

Final score, Six Nations 11, Peterborough 5.
