Kodiaks Explode in Third Period to Pull Away from NorthStars

The Owen Sound NorthStars (1-9) traveled east to face the Cobourg Kodiaks (5-4) in Major Series Lacrosse action Tuesday evening at the Cobourg Community Centre in Cobourg, Ontario. 

The goaltending match-up had Kaleb Martin in net for the NorthStars facing Laine Hruska in net for the Kodiaks.

The Cobourg Kodiaks weathered a determined Owen Sound comeback before erupting for six third-period goals to earn an 11-5 victory Tuesday night at the Cobourg Community Centre.

Cobourg built a commanding 4-0 first-period lead behind two goals from Brock Haley and markers from Briley Maxwell and Alex Marinier. Owen Sound responded with an impressive second-period surge, scoring four unanswered goals in just over six minutes as Greg Elijah-Brown, Riley Ford, Austin Blumbergs and Jake Rosa erased the deficit. Zach Thompson's late breakaway goal restored the Kodiaks' lead heading into the final frame.

The third period belonged entirely to Cobourg. Aaron Woods, Thompson, Shane Halliwell and Haley spearheaded a relentless offensive attack, combining for six goals to put the game out of reach. Callum Brennan added a late goal for the NorthStars, but the Kodiaks' balanced attack and timely scoring secured an 11-5 victory. Brock Haley led the way with a hat trick and six-point performance, while Cobourg improved to 5-4 on the season.


To The Game:

The Kodiaks struck first with Brock Haley converting an Alex Marinier pass at 2:03, followed by Briley Maxwell on the power-play finishing a Brock Haley feed from the side of the net at 5:24.  

Brock Haley then scored his second of the game with a low to low laser on the power-play at 7:05, followed by a howitzer from Alex Marinier converting a Brock Haley feed at 10:31.

Shots on goal favored Owen Sound 21-16.

Second Period:

The NorthStars started the second period with much more jump in their step.  Greg Elijah-Brown converted a Callum Brennan pass at 33 seconds, followed by Riley Ford with a blast off a Jake Rosa feed at 2:20.

Austin Blumbergs continued the Owen Sound comeback with a low to low shot off a Jake Rosa pass at 6:46, followed by Rosa himself with a blast off a Kaden Brennan feed at 6:57 to tie the game.

Cobourg regained the lead on a breakaway from Zach Thompson off a long lead pass from Nate Allan at 14:56.

After two periods, Cobourg 5 Owen Sound 4.
Shots on goal favored the Kodiaks 20-19.

Third Period:

After almost half a period of end to end action, the Kodiaks finally got on the board with Aaron Woods finishing an Andrew Vradenburg pass at 8:31, followed by Zach Thompson with a blast off a David Anderson feed at 10:04.  

Shane Halliwell then added back to back markers.  The first was a low to low laser in transition at 11:09, followed by a bounced shot off a Brock Haley pass 22 seconds later. 

Brock Haley added a power-play tally from the side of the net off an Alex Marinier pass at 13:35, followed by a jump across the crease from Aaron Woods at 14:23.

Callum Brennan added a late goal for the NorthStars off a Jake Rosa pass at 16:57.

Final score, Cobourg 11 Owen Sound 5.
Shots on goal favored the Kodiaks 23-17, for a game total of 59-57 in favor of Cobourg.
